Life as a trainee and a new parent: a guide to pregnancy, special parental leave and returning to practice

The beginning of life as a new parent is a time that can be full of stress and anxiety not least because of uncertainty surrounding entitlements and rights during pregnancy, maternity/paternity leave and on return to work. The Working Lives and LTFT subgroup have therefore set about developing resources to assist with these complex transition periods. Our infographic lays out key points and resources designed to point trainees in the right direction. We are pleased to announce this is now accompanied by a comprehensive guide; Life as a trainee and a new parent; A guide to pregnancy, special parental leave and returning to practice. We have pulled together information from the 2016 Junior Doctors contract, NHS terms and conditions of service handbook, Government, HEE/NHSE and BMA guidance. We aim to then lay out the processes, entitlements and rights for new parents clearly and succinctly, linking the exact clauses of the T&Cs of service with the guidance. This should make it easier for trainees to approach employers to request pregnancy, maternity/paternity and return to work provisions. It also includes resources from the BMA, ACAs and charity groups designed to assist trainees when things aren’t proceeding smoothly. Utilising this guide should empower trainees with knowledge, allowing them to have the pregnancy, leave and return that they need to thrive.
